SHARE NOW

During the spring semester, local nonprofit counseling organization FLACRA will offer services on the Hobart aznd William Smith campus through the college’s Hubbs Health Center.

Through a partnership with Finger Lakes Area Counseling and Recovery Agency (FLACRA) this spring, HWS is amplifying health and wellness support and education for the campus community with FLACRA providing services on-campus through the Hubbs Health Center two days a week.

“We are continually improving resources for student wellness at HWS because students’ health and wellbeing is essential for a successful educational experience,” says Vice President for Campus Life and Dean of Students Becca Barile. “This new collaboration with FLACRA is the latest addition to our support services, improving our capacity to enhance student wellness while deepening our relationships with partners in the local community.”

FLACRA counselors will complement campus clinical and support staff as they guide students and build a healthy and socially adept campus community. This partnership will promote best-in-practice harm reduction, counseling and informational resources for all students, expanding the successful work of campus programs around alcohol and drug safety and education.

Over the past 20 years, HWS has emerged as a leading institution for the study of student perceptions and behaviors regarding alcohol and drug use. Led by Professor of Sociology H. Wesley Perkins and Professor of Chemistry David W. Craig P’05, the HWS Alcohol Education Project is a broad collection of education and research initiatives developed to better inform students, faculty and staff in higher education and secondary school settings nationwide about alcohol and other drugs and related social norms and address problems of abuse. Their work developed what has become known as the social norms approach to promoting health and well-being, which has since been applied in a variety of settings and across various social circumstances, earning multiple awards from the U.S. Department of Education.

Founded in 1973, FLACRA is a private, not-for-profit agency serving individuals and their loved ones in the Finger Lakes Region whose lives are affected by substance use, mental health and other health related disorders.
