Hunter Fined for Poaching A White Deer

SHARE NOW

The Department of Environmental Conservation recently settled a case with a Romulus hunter accused of baiting and killing a white deer.

WETM-TV reports a white deer cape and antlers were seen at an Oswego taxidermy shop and a call was then made to the DEC to find out if someone poached the deer illegally.

Through a months-long investigation, the DEC officers tracked down a hunter who they didn’t identify. The DEC report says that the hunter showed officers where he shot the deer, passing two bags of feed along the way. The hunter claimed he didn’t know how the bags of feed got there, but trail cameras reportedly showed the hunter and someone else placing the bags there and the white deer eating from them.

The hunter paid $650 in penalties and the antlers were given to the DEC.

The Seneca White Deer have for years been fenced in at the former Seneca Army Depot. Many of the deer have escaped the old depot property.  Last weekend three white deer were spotted in a backyard on Stark Street in Waterloo.
