Heroism, Kindness to Highlight Varacalli Day in Seneca Falls

SHARE NOW

The It’s A Wonderful Life Festival Committee invites the community to join in honoring acts of heroism and kindness at the annual Antonio Varacalli Day on April 26th.

Each year, the Town of Seneca Falls remembers Antonio Varacalli, who selflessly gave his life to save another from drowning in the Cayuga-Seneca Canal in 1917. His extraordinary act of civilian heroism was posthumously recognized with the Carnegie Hero Fund Medal. This event celebrates his legacy and recognizes individuals in our community who embody courage, kindness, and civic responsibility.

The ceremony will begin at 11:00 AM on the Bridge Street Bridge (rain location: Seneca Falls Community Center) and will feature:

  • A patriotic Color Guard presentation led by Seneca Falls First Responders, scouts, and the Bedford Falls Mediocre Marching Band Drummers.
  • Musical performances by the Mynderse Chamber Singers.
  • A formal proclamation declaring the observance of Antonio Varacalli Day
  • The ringing of the Bells of Bedford Falls and a flower ceremony to honor past and present heroes.

The event will also include the announcement of the Antonio Varacalli Essay Contest winners. This year, students from Elizabeth Cady Stanton’s 3rd, 4th, and 5th-grade classes have been asked to write an essay on the theme:

“Heroes come in all shapes and forms, each making unique contributions to improve their communities and the world. If you could have one superpower, what would it be, and how would you use it to make a positive impact in your community?”

In addition, outstanding community members will be honored with:

  • The Community Angels Awards – Local non-profits are invited to nominate a “Community Angel” from their organization—an individual whose kindness and dedication have made a meaningful impact.
  • The Antonio Varacalli Hero Award – Presented to an individual who has demonstrated extraordinary courage and selflessness, embodying the spirit of the day.

Seneca Falls residents are encouraged to nominate someone who exemplifies the values of heroism and good citizenship. Nomination forms can be picked up at:

All nominations must be submitted by April 4th.

“Antonio Varacalli’s story reminds us that everyday people can do extraordinary things,” said event organizer Haidee Oropallo. “His act of heroism continues to inspire generations, and this event allows us to honor his legacy by recognizing those who make a difference in our community.”

The public is warmly invited to attend and take part in this moving tribute to heroism, community, and kindness on April 26.
