A driver escaped injury on Wednesday after the herbicide spray truck he was in overturned on Andrews Road in Canandaigua.
When firefighters arrived on the scene, they determined the herbicide being hauled by the truck was leaking from a 400-gallon tank, which prompted the incident to be declared a Level Zero HAZMAT with requests made for New York State DEC Spill Response and the Ontario County Hazardous Materials Team for a response.
The driver, who has yet to be identified, was able to extricate himself from the vehicle and said he was not injured.
Canandaigua Firefighters managed to minimize the leak from the tank and controlled the runoff using absorbent pads, pillows, and booms. T&R Environmental Emergency Response Team arrived to assist with cleanup and transfer the remaining herbicide to another tank before the vehicle could be recovered.
All hazards were eliminated, and there is currently no risk to the public or the environment from the leaked product. All units cleared the scene after almost five hours.
In a post on its Facebook page, the Canandaigua Fire Department extended its thanks to Ontario County Dispatch, Ontario County Emergency Management, representatives from the Ontario County Hazmat Team, NYS Police, Canandaigua Emergency Squad, NYS DEC Spill Response, T&R Environmental Emergency Response Team, and Fox’s Auto Towing for their assistance in this incident. They also thanked the Veterans Affairs Fire Department for covering the district during this extended incident.
