While responding to a residence in Ward 3 of the City of Canandaigua for the report of something burning early Saturday morning, 4 firefighters arrived to find a dangerous hazardous material’s incident

The City of Canandaigua Fire Department was dispatched to a residence in the city for the odor of something burning. The Fire Department reported Truck 281 and Engine 211 arrived immediately.

Crews entered the home expecting to search for a fire, only to be confronted with an immediate, irritating, and dangerous chemical odor. A Level 0 Hazardous Materials Incident was deemed. Crews ensured the safety of the residents and backed out of the residence. Firefighters used their Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) and re-entered the structure using numerous gas and chemical meters. During the investigation, it was determined that the residence was filled with high levels of ammonia and carbon monoxide. After searching for possible explanations for the levels, it was determined more resources were needed. Command confirmed a Level 1 Haz-Mat incident and requested representatives from the Ontario County Haz-Mat team to respond.

After a long investigation, it was determined that an RV-type refrigerator that uses ammonia was built into a kitchenette and had released its contents into the dwelling. Crews removed the refrigerator, ventilated and metered the residence, and ensured no further hazards.

The residents were evaluated by the Canandaigua Emergency Squad and sent to FF Thompson Hospital for further evaluation and are okay.
