Following reports of an internal investigation into a staff party held by the Ontario County District Attorney’s Office on Election Day—where alcohol was consumed in a courtroom during work hours—the Republican primary challenger to current District Attorney Jim Ritts released a statement in response.
Following yesterday’s reporting of an official Ontario County Compliance Investigation—covered by multiple news outlets—I am reminded exactly why I made the decision to run for District Attorney. It became clear to me that change in the DA’s office was not only necessary—but urgent. The people of Ontario County deserve leadership rooted in integrity, transparency, and an unwavering commitment to justice.
What’s most troubling is that District Attorney Jim Ritts was found to have been untruthful with Ontario County Compliance, the State Office of Court Administration and the Administrative Judge William Taylor when initially questioned during this investigation into a holiday party held on state property during business hours. That investigation was initiated in December. Conduct like this—dishonesty from our top law enforcement official—undermines public confidence and disrespects the very justice system he was elected to uphold. After learning of the investigation and being approached by many within the county who shared serious concerns about the current direction of the District Attorney’s Office, I made the decision to enter the race at the end of January 2025. That decision was driven by a desire to restore trust, ensure accountability, end the exodus of numerous long-serving attorneys from the DA’s office, and return the focus to serving victims and protecting our communities.
Let me be clear: this is not about “silly politics.” It is not “silly” for the public to expect their District Attorney to be truthful during an official investigation. That expectation is not partisan—it is fundamental to the rule of law and to good governance. To claim this is politically driven is a disgrace to the very system of justice we all deserve.
There is no greater responsibility than serving the people with honesty, fairness, and accountability. I am running to restore public trust in the office of District Attorney and to ensure that every victim, every case, and every community member receives the justice they deserve.
District Attorney Ritts released a statement to the media Thursday night:
“Just like plenty of offices everywhere, we held an office party on a State holiday. This event started many years ago under the direction of my predecessor and no one has ever made issue of it until now, when I happen to be running for re-election. Political silly season is apparently upon us, and I’m confident the people of Ontario County are smart enough to see through it.”
MacBride is a former prosecutor in the Ontario County District Attorney’s Office. They will face off in the Republican primary on June 24th.
