The African American Men’s Association of Geneva will recognize two longtime community supporters during its annual Valentine’s Day fundraiser later this month.

President Mark D. Gearan and Mary Herlihy Gearan will be honored at the event on Saturday at Club 86 for their years of support for the organization and its work with local youth.

For more than 30 years, the AAMA has helped students in Geneva through scholarships, mentoring, and college preparation programs. Proceeds from the fundraiser will benefit the group’s scholarship fund. The evening will include dinner, dancing, and raffles.

Association member Victor Nelson said the partnership between the AAMA and Hobart and William Smith Colleges began more than 25 years ago, shortly after the Gearans moved to Geneva. He said the couple quickly got involved with local organizations and supported the AAMA’s mentoring and life-skills programs.

With help from the colleges, the group was able to hold its College Life Skills Program on campus, giving high school students hands-on experience with the college application process, financial aid and budgeting. Nelson said the program also helped families, especially those with students who would be the first to attend college.

Gearan said he and Mary are grateful for the recognition and praised the AAMA for its impact on young people in the community.

Founded more than 40 years ago, the AAMA continues to provide scholarships and mentorship and works with local partners to expand opportunities for students.

Saturday’s fundraiser begins with cocktails at 6 p.m. and dinner at 7 p.m. at Club 86. Tickets are $65 for one person or $120 for couples. For tickets, contact Hank Pearson at 315-946-3158 or Doris Myers at 315-224-3710.
