Geneva Zoning Board Rejects Variances for Lakeview Housing

SHARE NOW

A proposed 74-unit housing project in Geneva faces a major setback.

The Finger Lakes Times reports the city’s Zoning Board of Appeals voted unanimously Tuesday night against granting variances needed for the Lakeview Downtown Lofts project on Genesee Street to move forward. Nearly all speakers at the public hearing opposed the $38 million development, which would have included 36 units for people with mental health challenges and the rest as affordable housing.

The Planning Board had approved the project last week.

Lakeview has a purchase agreement for the property that depends on the project receiving approvals.

Plans call for a five-story building, with a four-story section facing Castle Street, covering portions of Genesee, Castle, Colt, and Elm streets. About half of the apartments would be reserved for people with mental health diagnoses. The project also includes 2,400 square feet of office space.
