Geneva Schools Make Changes to Administrative Team

SHARE NOW

Two long-standing Geneva City School District educators will step into new roles on the administrative team this school year, and one Seneca Falls Central School administrator will join the Geneva Middle School administration.

Karen Fahy will serve as interim assistant superintendent for Teaching, Learning, and Accountability at Geneva City Schools—a role she also held in 2022.

Jason Michaels, currently an administrative intern in the district, will take over as director of athletics.

Matthew Bienvenue, previously an assistant principal intern in Seneca Falls, will be the new assistant principal at Geneva Middle School.

Fahy is replacing John González, who has accepted a position as director of Curriculum, Assessment, and Professional Development in the Churchville-Chili Central School District.

Fahy is currently the district’s director of Early College High School and brings more than 22 years of experience in Geneva City Schools as both a teacher and administrator. She stepped away from the district in 2017 to serve as a District Office administrator in the Rochester City School District and, later, as director of Geneva 2030 before returning to Geneva City Schools in 2022.

“We’re grateful to John for everything he’s done over the past three years, and wish him well as he starts his new role,” said Superintendent Bo Wright. “Karen has served Geneva well for a number of years, working in several different roles. We’re confident in her ability to help us move in the right direction instructionally as we conduct a search for John’s permanent replacement.”

“It is an honor to continue to serve the Geneva City School District in this capacity,” said Fahy. “I am deeply committed to our students, staff, and families, and grateful for the opportunity to support the district’s mission of educational excellence and equity.”

Michaels replaces Larry Lang, who is leaving the district. Michaels has been with Geneva since 2015, serving as a coach, physical education teacher, and administrative intern.

“Jason has been an educator in Geneva for a decade and has done a great job. He’s hardworking, talented, and great with kids and families. We’re confident he’ll continue to lead our athletics program in the right direction,” said Wright. “I’d also like to thank Mr. Lang for his service to the district — under his leadership, we were not only able to increase the number of students participating in athletics, but also the number of athletes completing community service work and earning scholar-athlete distinctions. We wish him well in his new endeavors.”

“I am deeply honored and humbled to serve in this new role within our school community,” said Michaels. “I am excited for the opportunity and look forward to working closely with our student-athletes, coaches, and families. I’m truly excited to step into this position and serve our community with passion, purpose, and pride.”

Bienvenue replaces Shannon Kelley, who is now Geneva Middle School’s principal. Bienvenue has worked in the Seneca Falls Central School District since 2011, serving as a literacy specialist, social studies teacher, and assistant principal intern. He is currently serving as a K–5 principal with Wayne Finger Lakes BOCES.

“Mr. Bienvenue is known in the Finger Lakes as an up-and-coming administrator,” said Wright. “He’s not only familiar with the region, but Geneva specifically, and comes to us with both instructional and student support experience. We look forward to welcoming him to the middle school later this summer.”

“I’m honored to serve in the community I’ve come to know and love over the past 16 years,” said Bienvenue. “Geneva is a special place, and I’m excited to contribute to the great work already happening at GMS. I’m committed to fostering a school culture where every student feels seen, supported, and empowered to succeed.”

Fahy has a doctorate in educational administration, a Certificate of Advanced Study in educational leadership and administration, a master’s in education and curriculum writing, and a bachelor’s in English literature from the University of Rochester.

Michaels has a Certificate of Advanced Study in educational leadership from the University of Rochester, a master’s in health promotion from the University of Alabama, and a bachelor’s in education from SUNY Brockport.

Bienvenue has a Certificate of Advanced Study in educational administration, a master’s in literacy 5–12, and a bachelor’s in social studies from SUNY Oswego.
