Authorities in Geneva are investigating a possible hate-related incident after discovering a racist etching in a public tunnel near the city’s lakefront.
Around 12:45 p.m. on Wednesday, officers from the Geneva Police Department’s Uniformed Division responded to a report of a suspicious condition in the lakefront tunnel. Upon arrival, police located the letters “KKK” etched into a tunnel wall. According to officials, the etching, made with a pencil, measured approximately five inches in height.
Police documented the scene with photographs and notified the Ontario County District Attorney’s Office. Both agencies have stated they take bias-related incidents seriously and are committed to identifying whoever is responsible.
“The Geneva Police Department and the Ontario County District Attorney’s Office take bias-related incidents very seriously and will make every effort to identify the suspect(s),” the department said in a statement.
Authorities are urging members of the public to report any unusual, hateful, or inappropriate behavior or markings in the community. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Geneva Police Department.
