The city’s Board of Ethical Review will determine whether Councilor-at-Large Ahmad Whitfield violated Geneva’s Code of Ethics after his arrest on felony drug charges.
The referral to the ethics board was approved by City Council in a 7-1 vote Wednesday night, following a recommendation from Mayor Jim Cecere, who had called for an ethics review last Thursday after Whitfield’s Jan. 7 arrest. Ward 3 Councilor Pat Grimaldi cast the sole “no” vote, saying the referral to the ethics board was premature.
Whitfield faces charges including second-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance, a class A-II felony, and two counts of third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance, class B felonies. He is accused of selling cocaine and fentanyl. Whitfield was released without bail last Monday.
The Board of Ethical Review will now review the matter and determine whether further action is warranted.
