Geneva police officers will receive annual pay raises under a new three-year labor agreement approved unanimously by the City Council last week.
Council members voted Dec. 23 during a special meeting to approve the contract between the city and Local 3471 of Council 82 of the New York State Law Enforcement Officers Union, which represents Geneva police officers and detectives. The previous contract was set to expire Dec. 31, and the new agreement takes effect Jan. 1.
Under the new contract, officers will receive 4 percent pay increases in each year of the three-year pact.
The agreement also includes changes to health insurance benefits for future hires. Current officers will continue to receive fully paid health insurance for individual high-deductible “Silver” plans, with the city covering 100 percent of the cost. The city and union did not disclose the specific cost-sharing breakdown for family plans for current employees.
However, officers hired on or after Jan. 1 will be required to contribute toward their health insurance premiums. Under the new agreement, the city will cover 85 percent of the cost of individual plans and 75 percent of the cost of family plans for new hires.
City officials say the changes are intended to balance competitive compensation with long-term cost sustainability while maintaining benefits for current employees.
