A shocking animal neglect case unfolded Tuesday in Canandaigua when the Ontario County Humane Society, with help from the Sheriff’s Office, raided a home on Overlook Lane.
The investigation started after an Ohio animal rescue raised alarms about unsanitary conditions and lack of care for dogs being fostered there. When authorities arrived, they found 14 dogs — terrier, spaniel, and Pitbull mixes — and three live cats in need of medical attention. Tragically, four cats were found dead in the kitchen freezer.
Some of the dogs were locked in metal cages, while others wandered freely in the home. Shelter staff said the animals were flea-ridden, had fur loss, dental problems, and ear infections. All are now getting medical care at the Ontario County Humane Society. The deceased cats have been sent to Cornell to find out how they died.
The home was also declared uninhabitable due to extreme hoarding.
Authorities arrested 63-year-old Sheila LaFleur and 61-year-old Robin Burr, charging both with Animal Cruelty. They’ve been released and are scheduled to appear in Canandaigua Town Court.
The Humane Society says the rescued animals are now receiving ongoing care and rehabilitation, and the investigation is continuing.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
