Former Seneca County Officer Charged With DWI in Romulus

A former part-time Special Patrol Officer with the Seneca County Sheriff’s Office has been arrested on Driving While Intoxicated charges following an off-duty incident.

Sheriff Timothy Thompson, Jr. confirmed on Thursday that Aaron Covert, 74, of Ovid, was employed by the Sheriff’s Office at the time and assigned to its Security Division. He has since been separated from service.

According to authorities, New York State Police charged Covert following a traffic stop last Sunday in Romulus with Driving While Intoxicated and operating a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol content above the legal limit. Both charges are misdemeanors and first-time offenses. He was released on appearance tickets.

Thompson reiterated that the alleged conduct occurred while Covert was off duty and does not reflect the values of the Sheriff’s Office.

The agency noted that Covert had served the community for many years at the Seneca County Courthouse and Seneca County Office Building following his retirement from New York State service.

The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
