Former Lyons Basketball Coach Accused of Sexual Abuse

A former Lyons High School basketball coach is facing sex crime charges, according to an unsealed indictment released Wednesday by the Wayne County District Attorney’s Office. 55-year-old Dean Schott II has been charged with criminal sex act, a Felony,  and misdemeanor sexual abuse following an investigation into an incident that allegedly occurred in 2019 by the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Roger Milby believes there are more victims.

The Lyons School District released a statement on Wednesday:

“The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office notified the district that Dean Schott II has been arrested. We are now able to share additional details following our April 10 communication. As the matter was under investigation, we refrained from public comment to avoid interfering with law enforcement efforts. On Tuesday, April 8, the district received a report that Mr. Schott, a former employee, was allegedly involved in an inappropriate relationship with a graduate from several years ago. The conduct is believed to have occurred while the individual was enrolled at LCSD. The district acted swiftly, involving the Sheriff’s Office and meeting with Mr. Schott, who resigned immediately. At this time, there is no evidence that any current students were involved. We will continue to cooperate with law enforcement as their investigation proceeds. We remain committed to maintaining a safe, supportive learning environment and will continue working closely with our community partners to protect the well-being of the students we serve.”

At his arraignment on Wednesday, Schott entered a not-guilty plea to the charges. He is scheduled to return to court in October and was released on his own recognizance, as the charges are not bail-eligible.

The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
