One local fire department has suspended one of its members after being arrested for allegedly starting a fire that prompted a response from his department on Tuesday.
Firefighters were called to the Foster Block Apartments in Clifton Springs shortly before 4 p.m. for a fire in the dumpster in the rear parking lot of the complex. After firefighters extinguished the blaze, information was developed that it was intentionally set. The ensuing investigation resulted in 19-year-old Joshua Musgrove being charged with arson. Police say Musgrove responded with the fire department to extinguish the fire.

Paul Conklin, Clifton Springs Fire Chief, released the following statement:
“The Clifton Springs Fire Department conducts arson background checks in accordance with New York State Law before accepting new members. At the time of Joshua’s application, there was no reason to suspect that he had any inclination to start fires. He has since been suspended, and if he is convicted, he will be terminated from the Clifton Springs Fire Department.”

Ontario County Sheriff David Cirencione also commented on the arrest:
“The Clifton Springs Fire Department assisted and cooperated fully with this investigation. While the arrest of a firefighter for arson is disturbing, it is important to note that the vast majority of our firefighters are dedicated members of their communities who give selflessly of themselves to assist others in their times of need.”
Musgrove has been issued an appearance ticket for Manchester Town Court.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
