AARP New York has appointed William McDonald, a longtime advocate for older adults and a former employee of the Ontario County Office for the Aging, as its new State President.
McDonald, a member of the AARP New York Executive Council since 2023, had been serving as acting president following the death of former president James O’Neal in April. In his new role, he will chair the AARP New York Executive Council and help guide the organization’s legislative priorities, community partnerships, and public advocacy efforts.
“Bill was the obvious choice for the job,” said AARP New York State Director Beth Finkel, citing his dedication and leadership, particularly on transportation issues affecting older New Yorkers.
McDonald brings decades of experience working in aging services and transportation. He previously worked with the Ontario County Office for the Aging, as well as the Monroe County Office for the Aging, Lifespan of Greater Rochester, and the Western New York Transportation Collaborative. He also served for 33 years as executive director of Medical Motor Service of Rochester and currently sits as a commissioner of the Rochester Regional Transportation Authority.
“I’m excited and honored to be appointed volunteer president of AARP New York,” McDonald said. “It’s an organization dedicated to improving the economic security, health, and quality of life for older adults and families.”
McDonald is a consultant for nonprofit organizations focusing on strategic planning and community transportation and holds a master’s degree in public administration, a bachelor’s degree in sociology, and a gerontology certification. He lives in Rochester with his wife and family.
