The Seneca County Sheriff’s Office has released information about a September 19th accident where four people were seriously injured on State Route 96 in Waterloo.
Deputies responded to the intersection of Route 96 and Brewer Road around 6:50 p.m., where they found a 2009 Chevrolet Silverado blocking part of the roadway and a 2016 Buick SUV off the road in a ditch.
Investigators say the Silverado’s driver, 33-year-old Andrew Kappesser of Waterloo, failed to yield while entering Route 96 from Brewer Road, causing the SUV to strike his vehicle and veer off the road.
The Buick was driven by 81-year-old Geraldine Sergeant of Clifton Springs. Three passengers—82-year-old Barbara Notebaert of Palmyra, 90-year-old June Debaere of Ulysses, and 73-year-old Karen Early of Newark—were also in the vehicle. All four suffered serious injuries and were taken to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, two by ambulance and two by Life Net helicopter.
Kappesser was checked at the scene by paramedics but was not injured. He was charged with failure to yield at an intersection and is scheduled to appear in Waterloo Town Court on October 15.
Both vehicles were heavily damaged and removed by tow trucks. A state Department of Transportation road sign was also damaged in the crash.
The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Waterloo Village Police, New York State Police, several local fire departments, North Seneca Ambulance, and Life Net.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
