SHARE NOW

Two state lawmakers from the New York City area are calling for closing the Seneca Meadows Landfill in Seneca Falls.

The Democrat and Chronicle reports the heads of the state Legislature’s environmental conservation committees have asked Gov. Kathy Hochul to reject a Texas company’s bid to expand the landfill and let it shut down as planned next year. In a letter to the governor, State Senator Pete Harckham and Assemblywoman Deborah Glick cite the danger from air pollution and runoff from chemicals in Seneca County where state health officials have identified a cluster of lung cancers.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation is reviewing plans to allow the landfill to use another increase the landfill’s height by 70 feet.
