The Cayuga Nation has resolved its lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Justice, leading to the DOJ’s recognition of the Clint Halftown-led Cayuga Nation Council as the lawful governing body.
The lawsuit, filed in late 2023, challenged the DOJ’s refusal to acknowledge the Halftown-led Council. The Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Assistant Secretary–Indian Affairs at the Department of the Interior had recognized the Halftown-led Council, a decision upheld by federal courts, yet the DOJ had continued to claim there was a leadership dispute.
