A dog was shot and killed by police in Canandaigua Friday afternoon after it viciously attacked its owner and a bystander on Saltonstall Street.
According to the Canandaigua Police Department, officers responded to the scene around 5:11 p.m. after receiving reports of an ongoing dog attack. When officers arrived, they found a pit bull actively mauling a woman on a lawn. As the first officer approached to assist the victim, the dog let go of the woman’s arm and charged at the officer, who fired three rounds from his service weapon, killing the dog.
The victim, a 29-year-old Canandaigua woman and the dog’s owner, was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital by Canandaigua Emergency Services. Police say she suffered severe injuries and disfigurement to her right arm and hand, along with bite wounds to her right leg, left shoulder, and face.
Investigators say the woman had been walking the dog on a leash when it turned on her. A bystander who tried to intervene before police arrived was also attacked and sustained multiple minor injuries but declined medical treatment.
The Ontario County Humane Society responded to take custody of the deceased animal. Police say the investigation into the dog’s history and origin is ongoing.
