An inspection of the Ontario County Landfill to determine the impact of 10,000 to 15,000 cubic yards of soil sliding down the southwest side at the site earlier this month turned up no solid waste violations. That was the message passed along to the county’s director of Sustainability and Solid Waste Management from the DEC.
The inspector also there has been no release of leachate since the November 16th soil-cap slide at the town of Seneca site. A cap is installed to limit the amount of precipitation that goes into the landfill and helps reduce gases and odors from escaping. Several damaged gas wells on the slope were capped and closed following the incident.
Casella operates the landfill and has hired a third party to determine what happened.
