Corrections Officer Charged With Felony Eavesdropping

An Ontario County Corrections Officer assigned to court security detail at the county courthouse has been arrested on a felony charge of eavesdropping. Sheriff David Cirencione says the allegations involving Deputy Adam Broadwell came to light in late January.

“Specifically, it was reported that the deputy was using an electronic hearing device to amplify voices for the purpose of listening in on conversations that he was not a part of and without the knowledge or permission of the people actually involved in the conversation,” said Cirencione.

After receiving word of the allegation, Sheriff Cirencione said an investigation was launched and Deputy Broadwell was reassigned from the Courthouse to the Jail.

In addition to felony eavesdropping, Broadwell was charged with official misconduct and possession of an eavesdropping device, both misdemeanors. He was released on an appearance ticket for Canandaigua City Court.

Sheriff Cirencione said Broadwell is a 20-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Office Corrections Division. He has been suspended without pay pending the outcome of the criminal charges.

Sheriff Cirencione also released this statement,  “I want to assure members of the public, especially our residents of Ontario County that the 280 men and women who make up the six Divisions of the Sheriff’s Office are dedicated professionals committed to bravely protecting this community with pride every day. Our Road Patrol, Corrections, Correctional Health Care, 911, Civil and Court Security Division are all accredited, meaning they exceed the professional standards set by New York State. Our members take pride in holding themselves to these standards. Any deviations from the ethical behavior essential to the law enforcement profession or lack of adherence to the laws we are sworn to uphold is not acceptable and will be dealt with accordingly.”
