As the Canandaigua Lake Watershed Association prepares to conclude its harmful algal bloom (HAB) monitoring program for the season, it is sharing some disturbing news.
According to the association, from September 10th through the 22nd, the lake experienced 14 consecutive days of cyanoHABs. This represents the longest documented stretch of HAB activity since monitoring began in 2015.
The association is confident that cooler temperatures will bring relief from HABs; however, it has noted that some years have seen blooms occur into October.
Canandaigua is not alone in being plagued by HABs with blooms being reported throughout the Finger Lakes.
The association will conclude its monitoring program on Thursday with the final water quality update being released on Friday. While the program will conclude on Thursday, volunteers will continue to report past the end date.
More information and a HAB map can be found on the CLWA website.
