Cayuga & Ontario County Students Nominated to Military Service Academies

13 high school students from across the 24th Congressional District have been nominated for United States Service Academies by Congresswoman Claudia Tenney.

Four of the prospective students are locals: Evan Moore of Cayuga County has been nominated for the Air Force Academy. Ebon Brown, also from Cayuga County, has been nominated for both the Naval and Air Force Academies. Brendan Laity and Griffin Garnot of Ontario County have been nominated for the Naval and Merchant Marine Academies respectively.

“As a mom of a US Naval Academy graduate, I am honored to nominate these outstanding individuals to attend our Nation’s Military Service Academies,” said Congresswoman Tenney. “One of my greatest privileges as a member of Congress is to nominate our next generation of leaders to these prestigious institutions, and each year, I am inspired by the exceptional applications submitted to our office and by their commitment to our country. Congratulations to all the nominees, and I wish you nothing but success in your future as you aim to serve our country!”

Tenney is allowed to nominate a limited number of prospective students to four of the nation’s five service academies each year. (The Coast Guard Academy does not require nominations.)

To be nominated, applicants must meet a series of requirements, including writing an essay detailing their motivations for attending an academy and becoming an officer in the United States military. A local committee of community leaders and veterans from across the 24th congressional district then recommends students to the congresswoman for nomination.

Upon graduation from a service academy, attendees are required to serve a minimum of five years in the military.
