A Cayuga County woman is facing charges in neighboring Wayne County after police say she struck a fire truck that was parked on the side of the road with her SUV Saturday night.
An investigation by the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office determined Jacqualine Gilfus, of Sterling, struck the Red Creek Fire Department truck that was parked on the shoulder of Main Street for traffic control purposes during a community event. At the time of the crash, the fire truck had its emergency red overhead lights on.
Following roadside standardized field sobriety tests, deputies arrested Gilfus for driving under the influence of drugs. She was brought to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office for processing and chemical testing.
Gilfus was released with multiple traffic tickets, including moving from lane unsafely, failing to exercise due care for a stopped emergency vehicle, speeding, and operating a motor vehicle while ability impaired by drugs. Gilfus will appear in Wolcott Town Court at a later date to answer the charges.
No injuries were reported as a result of the crash.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
