UPDATE: State Police arrested 25-year-old Frederick Holmes of Waterloo for DWI and other traffic infractions after he drove his car into the Cayuga-Seneca Canal. Holmes was issued an appearance ticket returnable to the Town of Waterloo Court.
Sunday afternoon Seneca County Sheriff’s Deputies, New York State Police, State DEC Police, Border City Firefighters and North Seneca Ambulance responded to the Route 96A bridge over the Cayuga-Seneca Canal in Fayette after a car left the highway and crashed into the canal.
No one was injured.
The car, with a kayak on its roof, was traveling north on Route 96 and left the highway just before the bridge. The car just missed a utility pole and ran over other electrical equipment before crashing down the steep bank into the canal.
Boat traffic on the canal was held up as firefighters place booms around the car to prevent fluids from leaking into the water.
No other details have been released, it’s believed alcohol was involved.
