A Canandaigua woman is facing multiple charges after authorities say she left several pets in her home without food or water while she traveled out of state.
The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office reports that on August 29, deputies and the Ontario County Humane Society responded to a residence at 3260 Route 364, Lot #43, after receiving a complaint of animal cruelty. Investigators say 27-year-old Alyssa Lyons had allegedly left three dogs unattended in the home while she traveled to Wisconsin for the Labor Day weekend.
Authorities initially believed a neighbor had been feeding the animals, but later learned that was not the case. Deputies and humane society staff seized three dogs and two geckos from the residence and brought them to a shelter.
On Wednesday, Lyons went to the shelter to inquire about her pets. She was arrested at that time and charged with five counts of animal cruelty. Lyons was issued an appearance ticket and released.
Officials say the dogs and geckos remain in the care of the animal shelter and are reported to be in good health.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
