Canandaigua Woman Arrested After 49-Mile Police Chase Ends in Crash

New York State Police say a Canandaigua woman was arrested after leading troopers on a 49-mile pursuit that ended in Oswego County.

Troopers charged 37-year-old Caitlyn Hand with operating a motor vehicle impaired by drugs, unlawful fleeing a police officer, reckless driving, and several traffic violations.

The chase began around 11:30 p.m. on Saturday when troopers attempted to stop a Chevrolet Traverse on Route 49 in the town of Vienna, for failing to keep right. Police say Hand refused to pull over, continuing westbound at high speed.

Troopers deployed tire deflation devices twice during the pursuit, which eventually forced the vehicle off the road in Sandy Creek. The SUV struck a tree, and officers found Hand unresponsive. Deputies administered naloxone, reviving her before she was taken to Samaritan Medical Center for evaluation.

Hand was later arraigned in Oneida County and released on her own recognizance.

Police say the pursuit lasted about an hour and covered nearly 50 miles. The investigation is ongoing.

The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
