In a recent unanimous decision, Canandaigua City Council voted to pursue $5.8 million in state grants aimed at reducing future flooding along Sucker Brook, a waterway that experienced severe overflow during a major storm two summers ago.
The funding, if awarded, would come from the Resilient Watershed Grant Program administered by the state DEC and the New York State Environmental Facilities Corporation. The city faces a June 6 deadline to submit its application.
The proposed flood mitigation project is a direct response to the devastating storm on July 9, 2023, when 5.5 inches of rain fell on the area in just six hours. The resulting floodwaters caused more than $1 million in damage to homes lining Sucker Brook, which flows into Canandaigua Lake.
