Canandaigua School Residents Voting on $70 Million Upgrade Project

Residents of the Canandaigua City School District will today decide the fate of a $70.2 million capital project that would upgrade all school buildings over the next three years. The project will be covered by $13.4 million in capital reserves and state aid, with no additional cost to taxpayers.

Details of the project as provided by the school district are listed below.  Voting takes place at the Canandaigua Primary-Elementary School Link Gymnasium and at the Cheshire Fire Hall until 9 p.m.

Canandaigua Primary- Elementary School – $18,030,000*

The Canandaigua Primary School was constructed in 1948, and the Elementary School was constructed in 1955. Both buildings are some of the oldest structures within our district and are in need of improvements. The areas in need at the Primary-Elementary School include both indoor and outdoor spaces such as playgrounds (Primary School and Elementary School as well as a new UPK age-specific playground), back parking lot asphalt, sidewalk around the bus loop, roofing, vehicle-gate, and perimeter fencing, for added security. This capital project would also provide air conditioning inside both school cafeterias and the Large Group Instruction room (LGI).

Canandaigua Middle School – $12,500,000*

The Canandaigua Middle School was constructed in 1962 and largely benefited from our last capital project. Areas remaining to be renovated include the kitchen, fitness center, gymnasium, boy’s locker room (girl’s locker room was previously renovated), and parking lot. Additionally, the exterior doors, generator, and digital signs would be replaced. The project also includes adding air conditioning to the cafeteria.

Canandaigua Academy – $30,100,000*

The Academy was constructed in 1990 and is the primary focus of this capital project. All bathrooms will be renovated, as well as staircases and Art/Technology classrooms. Replacements at the Academy include exterior doors, ceilings and energy efficient lighting in corridors, library carpet, elevator, generator, concession stand at Exhibition Field (track), a track timing system, stadium turf, tennis courts, and softball/baseball fields (a turf complex). Air conditioning in the cafeteria is also included in the project.
