The Canandaigua Lake Watershed Association (CLWA) has received a boost as it works to protect the lake.
The Rotary Club of Canandaigua has awarded the CLWA a $10,000 grant to launch the Jim Holden Legacy Project. Funded from the estate of Jim and Jane Holden, the association says the project will engage students in protecting the lake by monitoring its water quality through hands-on science experiments.
“Jim always gave of his time, talents, and treasures to assist others. He educated through example, and those who listened and observed were changed for the better,” said Mark Sheppard, Canandaigua Rotary Board member and close friend. “By supporting CLWA to educate students about the lake, we’re honoring Jim’s lifelong dedication to the greater Canandaigua community.”
The project will consist of two learning modules. One will be added to the existing Water & Wildlife Summer Camp that the CLWA puts on for middle school students, while the second will see the association partner with local schools to bring lake education to high school classrooms.
“We are deeply grateful to the Rotary Club of Canandaigua for their generous support and shared commitment to protecting Canandaigua Lake,” said Susan Martenson, President, CLWA Board of Directors. “This collaboration exemplifies the power of community partnerships. Together, we’re not only safeguarding a vital natural resource but also working to inspire the next generation to continue this important work.”
A media event showcasing the program is being planned for the summer.
