Suspect in Custody After Man Found Critically Injured at Canandaigua Motel

A Canandaigua man has been charged following an investigation into a violent incident that left another man critically injured inside a room at the D&D Motel on Friday morning.

According to the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office, 27-year-old Justin Rogers, has been charged with Assault in the First Degree, a Class B violent felony. Investigators allege that Rogers was involved in a violent altercation with 53-year-old John D. Kirby, also of Canandaigua, inside Room 1 of the motel where he lived.

Deputies say Rogers struck Kirby with an axe during the incident, causing severe injuries to his skull.

The investigation began at around 7:30 a.m. when the Ontario County 911 Center received a call requesting a welfare check at the D&D Motel. Responding deputies, along with the Canandaigua Emergency Squad, arrived to find an adult male unresponsive and suffering from significant traumatic injuries.

Kirby was treated at the scene before being airlifted by LifeNet to Strong Memorial Hospital, where he remains in critical condition, authorities said.

Rogers was arraigned in Ontario County CAP Court and has been held without bail pending further court action.

The investigation is ongoing. Authorities have not released additional details regarding what led to the altercation.

He was treated at the scene and then airlifted by LifeNet to Strong Memorial Hospital, where he remains in critical condition. Authorities say there is no ongoing threat to the community.
