A state audit says officers at the Border City Hose Company failed to oversee the group’s finances properly.
The report found that officers limited the treasurer’s control over funds, and a director, who was also the chief of the Border City Fire District, used company money for personal expenses. The former director, John Morabito, pleaded guilty last July to misapplication of property and was ordered to repay nearly $18,000. The audit, covering January 2018 through February 2020, includes 13 recommendations to improve financial oversight.
The company has since reorganized as a social club.
