House Republicans Support Striking Corrections Officers With Resolution

SHARE NOW

As strikes continue at state prisons, the entire New York Republican Congressional Delegation is backing a resolution supporting correctional officers seeking safer working conditions.

Co-sponsors of the resolution include Representatives Claudia Tenney (NY-24), Nick Langworthy (NY-23), Nick LaLota (NY-1), Michael Lawler (NY-17), Andrew Garbarino (NY-2), and Nicole Malliotakis (NY-11).

“Corrections officers across the state have had enough of the unsafe working conditions imposed on them by Albany Democrats’ pro-criminal policies, like the HALT Act. I am outraged by Governor Hochul’s failure to prioritize their safety and well-being and her refusal to address serious concerns about staffing shortages and the effects of the HALT Act, which make every New York correctional facility even more dangerous. Enough is enough. Today, I introduced this resolution in the House to demonstrate my unwavering support for these corrections officers as they continue to fight for better working conditions,” said Congresswoman Tenney.

In 2022, the HALT Act was signed into law and limited correctional officers’ ability to discipline inmates through the use of solitary confinement.  House Republicans say without this measure previously used to maintain safety among inmates, violence inside New York’s prisons has been on the rise. The federal lawmakers say attacks on correctional officers, nurses, and other staff across the state have risen by 85% since 2019. These increasingly dangerous conditions have also resulted in the number of facility personnel to drop significantly, declining from 16,305 corrections officers in 2022 to 13,886 in 2025. Earlier this year, the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision attempted to cut 30% of correctional officer positions, threatening to make the job even more dangerous for our brave corrections officers.
