The Smith Center for the Arts has taken another step to improve accessibility at the historic Smith Opera House.
With support from the New York State Council on the Arts and the Wyckoff Family Foundation, the theater has installed a safety railing and hand posts in the balcony seating area. The upgrades come as part of the center’s ongoing effort to make the 131-year-old building safer and more welcoming for all patrons.
Previously, the balcony had no handrails and a low front edge, raising safety concerns—particularly for young children and patrons with mobility challenges.
“Many patrons know that the Smith’s balcony is a very special place to enjoy performances,” said Executive Director Susie Monagan. “You are ‘among the stars’ and surrounded by gorgeous art deco styling. We are so grateful to the Wyckoff Family Foundation, Russell Fabrications, and NYSCA for supporting this project and making sure the balcony is safe as well as beautiful.”
The balcony improvements are the latest in a series of accessibility updates at the Smith Opera House, part of the center’s mission to engage all members of the Finger Lakes community.
