As some striking corrections officers across the state face termination, hundreds more rallied at the State Capitol in Albany Tuesday.
The rally drew hundreds of corrections officers demanding immediate action from state lawmakers and Governor Kathy Hochul. Their key concerns include repealing the HALT Act, ensuring full staffing, permanently ending 24-hour shifts, and imposing limits on mandated equipment. Officers argue these changes are necessary to restore peace and order in New York’s jails and prisons.
State Senator Tom O’Mara, whose 58th Senate District encompasses all of Chemung, Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben, Tioga, and Yates counties, and part of Allegany County, was among the speakers who called on Albany Democrats to “finally address rising violence and unsafe conditions within our prisons by repealing HALT and other actions.”
