Watch out for the Wolverines!
Weedsport Central School District’s Board of Education voted Monday to officially change the school’s nickname. The district has chosen to rebrand itself as the Wolverines.
Students, staff, community members, and alumni were surveyed last week on whether they’d prefer to be called the Weedsport Wolverines or the Weedsport Thunderbolts. Those two names were selected as finalists from a list of five names – Evergreen, Express, Green Wave, Thunderbolts, and Wolverines – voted on by students and staff earlier in the month.
The district can no longer use its Warriors moniker following the State Education Department’s ruling that all schools with Native American mascots must replace them by the end of this school year.
Last week, Canandaigua announced that it will now be known as the Gray Wolves, replacing the Braves.
