One Cayuga County village is now waiting to see if it’ll receive millions of dollars in state funding to revitalize its downtown.
On October 18, the Village of Weedsport submitted applications for a $10 million Downtown Revitalization (DRI) award and a $4.5 million NY Forward award. The village is eligible to win either award but not both.
On Friday, Mayor ChadPlatte, along with Javier Zavelta and Nathaniel Rogers with the Cayuga County Planning & Economic Development Department gave a presentation to the Central NY Regional Economic Development Council as to why they should receive funding. the council oversees the awards for communities in Cayuga, Cortland, Madison, Onondaga, and Oswego Counties.
Speaking with Finger Lakes News Radio, Zavaleta said they’re confident Weedsport will win one of the awards.
“We feel very confident about [the presentation]. We hit all the major selling points that we wanted to hit. We hope for the best. We feel pretty good about the showing that we did and think we represented the village to its fullest.”
Winners are expected to be announced early next year.
New for this round of funding, applicants are required to be designated as pro-housing communities. In August, Weedsport received its designation.
