SHARE NOW

The victims of last Tuesday’s fatal house fire in Cayuga County have been identified.

The bodies of 56-year-old Michael Smith and 44-year-old Amanda Walker were located in the rear bedroom of a Drake Road residence in Conquest after firefighters extinguished an early morning fire. A neighbor attempted to awaken Smith and Walker after spotting flames coming from the residence but was unable to. The Cayuga County Coroner responded to the scene and transported both decedents to the Onondaga County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy to determine an official cause of death.

Also located inside the residence were three dogs, with one being deceased. The other two dogs were taken to a local veterinarian for care.

The Cayuga County Fire and State Fire responded to the scene and are investigating the cause of the fire. The preliminary investigation has determined the fire to be electrical in nature.

The investigation is continuing.
