2:15p Update:
More information has been made available on the officer-involved shooting that occurred on Thursday in the City of Auburn.
Auburn Police Chief James Slayton, Cayuga County District Attorney Brittany Grome Antonacci, and Cayuga County Sheriff Brian Schenck were at the DA’s offices Friday afternoon to provide more details on the Thursday night incident that left one man dead.
Law enforcement reports responding to Melone Village at around 8:00p for an investigation into child sexual exploitation.
It was during this time that Scott Demonte made contact with officers. While outside the apartment unit, the 51-year-old Fayetville man then brandished a handgun and pointed it at officers before turning the gun on himself, shooting himself in the head.
Resuscitative efforts were made by officers before he was transported to the hospital; however, Demonte succumbed to his injuries.
According to Chief Slayton, the scene was cleared shortly after 2:00a.
During the incident, an Auburn Police Officer fired a single round in Demonte’s direction; however, at this stage in the investigation, it is not believed that the bullet struck him. Sheriff Schenck added that the bullet had been recovered.
Chief Slayton stated that, in accordance with department policy, the officer who fired the shot has been placed on paid administrative leave while the investigation is ongoing.
The ongoing investigation is being headed by the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office in conjunction with New York State Police, and the New York State Attorney General’s Office. The Auburn Police Department is assisting.
As part of the investigation, Sheriff Schenck said his office is reviewing a large amount of evidence including footage from officer-worn cameras.
As to a specific timeline of events, the sheriff could not go into detail at this time but said, “The whole situation unfolded very quickly. It was very dynamic.”
With Malone Village being densely populated and containing many families, Chief Slayton added that the department is working with schools to provide services for any children who may have witnessed the shooting.
The investigation is ongoing and the sheriff’s office is asking anyone with information relative to the incident to contact Detective Sergeant Nicole Stewart at 315-294-8093. Information can also be shared anonymously via the Sheriff’s website or the Safer Watch App by clicking here.
