An upcoming lecture will go over the early history of New Hope Mills in Cayuga County.
As part of the Ward O’Hara Ag Museum’s Martha Shaw Harvesting History Series, mill owner, Dale Weed, and his son, Duane, will discuss recently uncovered information about the mill’s early days.
Speaking with Finger Lakes News Radio, Duane said the talk will begin with the birth of the mill’s founder, Charles Kellogg, in 1773 and progress to the modern day.
“A lot of the history there was not understood at all. It’s going to be a really fresh discussion. I don’t think anyone in the general public knows a lot of these things.”
The future of the mill complex in the Hamlet of New Hope will also be discussed. David told Finger Lakes News Radio that plans are underway to create a nonprofit with the goal of preserving the complex where the earliest building dates to 1823.
In 2003, manufacturing operations moved to a new complex in Auburn. The original complex was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.
Free and open to the public, the talk will begin at 6:00p on Thursday at the museum.
