Unity House is welcoming its new Chief Executive Officer and has added a new Chief Operating Officer.
Following the former CEO Liz Smith’s retirement on December 31, Darlene Podolak took over the position on January 1, becoming Unity House’s fourth CEO.
Podolak began her Unity House career in 1992. The next year, she helped open Unity House’s first group home for individuals with disabilities. She later served as the organization’s program manager, director, and COO. During this time helped lead Unity House’s growth.
“Darlene helped build this organization into what it is today,” said Ken Knight, president of Unity House’s Board of Directors. “There are so many people in our community who need our support. Under Darlene’s leadership, I see Unity House growing responsibly to meet that need.”
Unity House’s Board of Directors approved Podolak’s appointment to CEO in November 2024 when Smith announced she would retire to ensure a smooth transition.
Podolak said she is guided by Unity House’s mission – to empower and enrich the lives of people in recovery, coping with a mental illness, and/or diagnosed with a developmental disability – and making it a top place to work.
“I’m advocating relentlessly to make sure our direct support professionals receive the pay, training and support they need,” Podolak said. “This is essential work, and I want everyone who works here to feel valued.”
Additionally, she said she will work to ensure state funding for Direct Support Professionals keeps up with inflation and will ask donors, community partners, and volunteers to “deepen their commitment to the cause.”
“Unity House is part of what makes our community strong,” Podolak said. “I’m asking folks to put their time, their ideas and their money where their values are.”
Podolak has a master’s degree in management from Keuka College and a bachelor’s degree in music therapy from SUNY Fredonia.
Amy Durkin, who joined Unity House in September 2025, replaces Podolak as COO. She brings over 20 years of nonprofit experience to the organization, having previously provided clinical services and served on leadership teams at Liberty Resources, Hillside Children’s Centers, and Huntington Family Center.
“Amy is well-prepared to support the program directors and their teams to move our strategic plan forward,” Podolak said.
Durkin has a master’s degree in counseling psychology from Towson University.
Unity House is a nonprofit providing housing and other supports for over 700 people with disabilities.
