The Auburn-based nonprofit Unity House of Cayuga County has announced its recipients for its 2026 community awards, recognizing two local women for their service and advocacy.

Julie Bennett of Aurora has been named the 15th annual Open Arms Award recipient, while Melody Smith Johnson of Auburn will receive the 16th annual Fred Atkins Community Service Award.

Both women will be honored at Unity House’s annual awards dinner on Monday, April 27, at the Hilton Garden Inn Auburn. The event is open to the public. Tickets are $85 per person, and registration is now open through Unity House’s website.

Founded in 1977, Unity House provides services for individuals with mental illnesses, developmental disabilities, and substance use disorders. The nonprofit serves more than 750 adults across eight central New York counties and employs about 350 people.

Open Arms Award: Julie Bennett

Bennett is a 12-step recovery advocate and owner-operator of Town & Country Dog Grooming in Aurora and Ithaca. She works closely with residents of Grace House and others in recovery, offering mentorship and support based on her personal experience.

According to Unity House, Bennett currently sponsors seven women in recovery in the Auburn area. She provides transportation to meetings and appointments, remains available to those in crisis, and hosts regular gatherings for women in recovery.

She was nominated by Grace House Director Dorothy Radcliff and several residents.

Fred Atkins Community Service Award: Melody Smith Johnson

Johnson, a social justice activist and business owner, was nominated by Gwen Webber-McLeod for her work expanding access to opportunity and leadership for Black and Brown girls and women.

Unity House says Johnson is the first African American to receive the Fred Atkins Community Service Award.

She volunteers with numerous local organizations, including the Auburn Public Theater and the Harriet Tubman Center for Justice & Peace.

Johnson is the owner of Melody’s Co-Working and Event Space in Auburn, president of MSJ HR Consulting, and owner and lead designer of Divine Coverings, Inc.
