United Way of Cayuga County is launching its annual fundraising campaign later this month, which will include a kickoff kickball tournament and a family picnic at the Throop Fire Department and Sports Complex.
Julisa Stone with the nonprofit explained to Finger Lakes News Radio the importance of the event.
“Our kickoff is when we will announce what our goal is for this fundraising year and it’s also an opportunity to meet some of the agencies that your gifts from last year are supporting this year.”
Those 14 and up can register as individuals, in small groups, or in full teams of ten. The tournament will run from 12:30-2:30p. This tournament costs $5.00 per person. Those 13 and under can compete in their own tournament for free. Registration can be done here.
As Stone said, the kickoff is also an opportunity to meet with those agencies receiving funding from United Way.
“[For example], our friends at the Boy Scouts are bringing their blow-up archery set. Our friends at the Auburn Rescue Mission have a gravitational game that they’re going to play with visitors who stop at their table.”
Also, as part of the fundraising efforts, Stone said United Way is challenging the community to make a 1/2 mile “coin snake” at the sports complex’s 1/2 mile long walking track
“Pennies, quarters, dimes, any coins that you’d like to donate to United Way, we’re going to line them up along the track and to build a snake and we want to reach that 1/2 mile.”
The kickoff and picnic will take place on Sunday, September 22.
