Starting Sunday, Cayuga County will implement a county-wide hiring freeze for all departments, a move prompted by a $5.6 million shortfall in the state budget. The freeze is expected to last for the next three months and applies to all full-time, part-time, and temporary positions, whether currently vacant or expected to become vacant.
County legislators, who have been discussing the measure for some time, finalized the decision in response to growing financial pressures.
While the freeze is broad, exceptions will be made for select critical roles. Positions such as road patrol deputies, social workers, and 911 dispatchers will still be filled as needed, according to county officials.
