After recently taking in over two dozen cats, one area SPCA is in urgent need of supplies.
Nick Lapresi is the Executive Director of the Finger Lakes SPCA of Central New York. Speaking with Finger Lakes News Radio, he said that the shelter has seen an influx of cats in recent weeks with 18 cats being taken from a single home.
In this particular case, we were able to work with the people in a really dire situation and were able to avoid law enforcement, and I think I’m around 18 cats just from this house that we’ve taken in,” said Lapresi.
With the sudden influx of felines and the need to care for the animals already at the Auburn shelter, Lapresi said the group is in urgent need of cleaning supplies to ensure the animals are kept in a safe and healthy environment.
“We use a product called Rescue,” Lapresi continued. “It’s a disinfectant cleaner and deodorizer. It’s made for veterinary use to make sure we’re killing any of those zoonotic diseases that animals could have.”
Other cleaning supplies in high demand include paper towels, laundry detergent, and dish soap.
Anyone interested in donating supplies can do so by using the Amazon link on the SPCA’s website or by purchasing them and dropping them off at the society’s 41 York Street location. Financial donations can also be made online, in person, or via mailing a check to them.
In a Facebook post from last week, the SPCA said it needed pet carriers for the cats. Reflecting on the community support the organization receives, Lapresi said the shelter now has an overwhelming amount of pet carriers and is not seeking more at this time.
More animals at the shelter also means more work for staff and volunteers. As such, the SPCA is seeking new volunteers. Anyone interested in volunteer opportunities is asked to contact the shelter at 315-253-5841.
With so many new animals at the shelter, Lapresi pointed out that now is the perfect time to adopt your next pet.
“If someone has been interested or thinking about adopting a new animal, especially a cat right now, there’s no better time to come in and find your next forever pet,” Lapresi said.
