State St. Added to Auburn’s Summer Road Improvement Program

A portion of State Street has been added to the City of Auburn’s 2024 Summer Road Improvement Program.

When the city originally planned its 2024 Road Improvement Program, estimates of potential New York State funding were unavailable as the state budget had not yet been passed. Because of this, a conservative estimate was made based on 2022 funding levels, coming in at $3,216,717.02.

With the passage of the budget, an additional $281,207.51 became available to the city.

On Thursday, City Council authorized a change order to increase the funding given to Northern Asphalt LLC to perform the additional work.

City Clerk Chuck Mason, speaking on FLX Morning with Ted Baker, said the work will take place on the portion of State St between West Garden and Perrine Streets.

“We will be adding on this section of State St and I think there’s a lot of people that are relieved to hear that this will happen on this summer’s schedule,” said Mason.

This year’s budget process was contentious with the 2024-2025 budget being passed weeks after its April 1 deadline as Albany debated and compromised on what should and shouldn’t receive funding. Mason added, that despite cuts to other important areas, the increase in road funding will have a positive effect on Auburn.

“This is one example in which state government really came through for us here in Auburn and other municipalities throughout the state with some increases to road funding this year.”

Auburn has received funding through several state funding programs, including the Consolidated Highway Improvement Program (CHIPS), Pave NY, Pave our Potholes (POP), Emergency Winter Recovery (EWR), and State Touring Routes (STR).
