A special event on Saturday will celebrate the hard work that went into preserving a famous Auburn landmark.
Cultural Resource Specialist Jessica Bowes will give an in-depth look at the process of preserving the Thompson AME Zion Church.
The church was attended by famed abolitionist and suffragist Harriet Tubman while she lived in Auburn, and her funeral was held there in 1913 before she was buried in nearby Fort Hill Cemetery.
The National Park Service began efforts to restore the church and rehabilitate the adjacent parsonage in 2022. In June 2024, the Harriet Tubman National Historical Park would open, allowing visitors to tour the church.
The program will begin at 1:00p at the church.
