SPCA Working Cat Program Helps Overlooked Felines Find Homes

SHARE NOW

Does your business or property have a mouse problem? The Finger Lakes SPCA of Central New York has a solution.

Shelter Manager Erika Murphy told Finger Lakes News Radio about its Working Cat Program, a program it created to give cats that may not be appropriate for placement in a traditional home an opportunity for a better life through adoption.

Suitable for a variety of locations, Murphy said these “cats with careers” provide a valuable service with minimal effort on the owner’s part.

“They do great at shops like garages, or nurseries or vineyards and wineries and things like that,” said Murphy. “They live outside; they work, and are natural pest deterrents. They just need food, shelter, water, and love from a distance.”

The adoption process for felines in the program is similar to that of adopting a house cat; however, Murphy said there are two main differences. Firstly, instead of the standard adoption fee, these cats have a donation-based adoption where one chooses the amount of money being donated for the cat Secondly, while most people like to get to know the house cat they’re adopting, most people looking for working cats simply take what’s available.

As these cats work best in pairs, the shelter recommends adopting two at a time.

Like all cats at the SPCA cats being adopted through the program are neutered/spayed and microchipped.

“It’s really special to us because it offers these cats that are oftentimes overlooked an opportunity to live better lives, so we’re excited about the program and grateful to be able to offer it to the community.”

To adopt through the Working Cat Program, you can visit the SPCA at 41 York St, Auburn, or call 315-253-5841.
